Language Credit and Placement
This page explains the ways in which incoming students who have previously studied a language can be placed into an appropriate course at Notre Dame. Language placement is determined in one of two ways:
- Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or SAT II Exam
- ND Language Placement Exam
AP, IB, or SAT II Exams
Students who have taken an AP, IB, or SAT II exam may, depending on the score, receive credit and placement from the exam. For most languages, students who have earned Advanced Credit through one of those exams do not need to take a Notre Dame placement exam.
Students must follow the placement determined by their AP, IB, or SAT II credit. Only the relevant language department can approve a change in placement.
Students with Advanced Credit for German, Chinese, or Japanese who wish to study the language at Notre Dame must take the relevant Notre Dame placement exam even though they have Advanced Credit.
Notre Dame Language Placement Exam
Students with experience in a language but who did not take an AP, IB, or SAT II exam or did not receive a high enough exam score to earn credit must take a Notre Dame language placement exam. These exams are for placement only and do not confer any credit. Placement exams may only be taken once unless the department specifies otherwise. First-year students are advised to take the placement exam in the summer before registering for courses, unless they are absolutely certain they will not be taking a language course in the fall semester.
Students must follow the placement determined by their placement exam score. Only the relevant language department can approve a change in placement.
Less Commonly Taught Languages
The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC) offers beginning and intermediate courses in less commonly taught languages such as Swahili, Quechua, and Hindi. Students can register for the Beginning I courses in these languages without a placement exam.
